80. The Punch Card

OPENING MONOLOGUE

INT. COMEDY CLUB - NIGHT

JERRY:
What is the deal with loyalty cards? They give you a little piece of cardboard, and suddenly you're in a committed relationship with a sandwich shop. 'Buy nine, get the tenth free!' You're actually spending eighty dollars to earn a three-dollar turkey sub that you didn't even want in the first place.

SCENE 1: INT. JERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY

Scene 1
[Jerry sits on the sofa examining a small paper punch card, while George paces back and forth near the kitchen island with a mug of coffee.]

GEORGE: It's a scam, Jerry! A psychological trap!

JERRY: I have eight punches, George. Eight! If I stop going now, those eight punches die in vain.

GEORGE: What are you buying?

JERRY: Wheatgrass kale blasts. They taste like lawn mower clippings.

GEORGE: So stop going!

JERRY: I can't stop! The guy behind the counter knows me now. He points at the card, he winks... he knows I'm close.

GEORGE: You know what my place offers? Punch ten holes, you get a windbreaker. A real leather-trimmed windbreaker!

JERRY: Where is this?

GEORGE: The dry cleaner on 81st. I'm on punch nine. But I don't have any more dry cleaning!

JERRY: So take in a blanket.

GEORGE: A blanket? What am I, made of money? I'm thinking of buying a Hole Puncher.

JERRY: You're going to forge a loyalty punch?

GEORGE: They use a star shape! Do you know how common star-shaped hole punchers are? I can buy one at Staples for four dollars!

JERRY: You're risking a criminal record for a polyester windbreaker.

SCENE 2: INT. MONK'S DINER - DAY

Scene 2
[Elaine sits opposite Kramer at a booth, carefully sliding a stack of coupons into her wallet while Kramer intensely studies a menu.]

ELAINE: So Jerry is drinking liquid turf just for a free smoothie?

KRAMER: It's the power of the card, Elaine. It taps right into the hunter-gatherer brain. Collect the tokens, survive the winter!

ELAINE: It's a piece of paper!

KRAMER: I'm on a card system right now with my shoemaker. Every five heels I get a toe cap.

ELAINE: A toe cap? Who needs a toe cap?

KRAMER: You'd be surprised! One kick against a curb, bang! Saved by the cap.

ELAINE: What about George?

KRAMER: George is playing with fire. The dry cleaner star punch has a distinct five-point radius. You can't just buy any office supply puncher.

ELAINE: How do you know that?

KRAMER: I tried it in '88 with a fash-ion outlet in Queens. Ended up banned from the borough for six months.

ELAINE: You got banned from Queens?

KRAMER: Unofficially, yeah. The dry cleaners network... they talk, Elaine.

SCENE 3: INT. SMOOTHIE SHOP - DAY

Scene 3
[Jerry stands reluctantly at a brightly lit stainless steel counter, holding a green slushy drink while the clerk smiles expectantly with a hole punch.]

CLERK: That'll be six fifty, Jerry! One more punch after this and you get the Megabyte Muscle Blender free!

JERRY: Great. Fantastic. Can't wait.

CLERK: You don't sound excited. This is the Mega-Blender!

JERRY: I'm thrilled. It's just... does this green stuff always smell like swamp sediment?

CLERK: That's the spirulina working its magic!

JERRY: Right. Magic.

CLERK: Pass over the card, let me make it official. Punch number nine!

JERRY: Actually... what if I just forfeit the ninth punch and give you the drink back?

CLERK: Return a custom blend? Sir, the card binds the transaction.

JERRY: The card binds it? It's paper!

CLERK: No punch without a full sip.

JERRY: You're holding my loyalty hostage!

SCENE 4: INT. JERRY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Scene 4
[George sits on Jerry's armchair wearing an oversized, stiff vinyl windbreaker while Jerry pours himself a glass of water at the sink.]

JERRY: So you used the star puncher?

GEORGE: Clean through slot ten! The guy didn't even blink. Handed over the windbreaker right off the display rack.

JERRY: It looks a little tight on the shoulders.

GEORGE: It's European cut! It's supposed to hug the frame.

JERRY: It squeaks when you breathe, George.

GEORGE: That's the sound of victory! What happened with your smoothie freebie?

JERRY: I drank it. Punch nine secured. But then I lost the card on the subway ride home.

GEORGE: You lost nine punches?!

JERRY: Nine punches, gone. Sixty dollars of liquid grass down the drain.

GEORGE: So you start over!

JERRY: Never again! I'm off the grid, George. Cash only, no cards, no rewards!

GEORGE: Suit yourself. Me? I'm starting a coffee punch card tomorrow. Eleven stars to a free travel mug!

CLOSING MONOLOGUE

INT. COMEDY CLUB - NIGHT

JERRY:
The worst part of losing a punch card is knowing somebody else found it. Somewhere in the city, a guy is walking up to a counter with nine punches he didn't earn, getting a free smoothie he didn't suffer for. That's not loyalty... that's punch-card stolen valor!
