OPENING MONOLOGUE
INT. STAND-UP COMEDY CLUB - NIGHT
JERRY:What is the deal with paper receipts? You buy a pack of gum, and they give you a parchment scroll. It’s like a ancient Roman decree for a dollar fifty. You don't just put it in your wallet; you fold it, you crease it, you tuck it... by the time you leave the store, you look like an accountant who just committed tax fraud.
SCENE 1: INT. MONK'S DINER - DAY
[Jerry and George sit across from each other in a vinyl booth at Monk's Diner, surrounded by discarded paper napkins.]
GEORGE: She ordered the sea bass, Jerry. The sea bass! On a first date!
JERRY: Sea bass is a bold opening move. That’s a second-tier fish.
GEORGE: And then she didn't even call me back. I funded a full marine culinary experience, and for what? Zero closure! I'm thinking of sending her an invoice.
JERRY: You can't invoice a date, George. That violates every unwritten law of civil society.
GEORGE: Why not? It was an investment! If the business fails, the shareholders get liquidated!
JERRY: You’re not a corporation, George. You’re just a guy who paid forty dollars to watch someone eat fish.
GEORGE: Forty-two fifty! Plus tip!
JERRY: Well, the tip was your choice.
SCENE 2: INT. JERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY
[Elaine sits at Jerry's kitchen counter flipping through a magazine while Kramer rummages frantically through Jerry's refrigerator.]
ELAINE: What is that, a CVS tape?
JERRY: No! I bought a bottle of water and a pack of mints at the corner deli. Look at this length! It has coupons for oil changes and a survey about my store experience.
KRAMER: (turning around from fridge) Oh, the paper stream! You know, Jerry, those receipts contain high levels of thermal chemical coating. You absorb it right through the fingertips!
ELAINE: Kramer, it's paper.
KRAMER: It’s poison, Elaine! I keep all mine in a lead-lined lockbox under the sink.
JERRY: The cashier insisted I fill out the customer satisfaction code on the back. She stared at me, Elaine. She stared right into my soul until I put it in my pocket.
ELAINE: So throw it out!
JERRY: I can't! What if she asks me next time I go in? 'Did you take the survey, Mr. Seinfeld?' I'd have to move!
SCENE 3: INT. GEORGE'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
[George sits at his living room coffee table surrounded by piles of neatly organized receipts, holding an old calculator.]
GEORGE: Look at this ledger! March 2002. Karen. Cheesecake Factory. She ordered appetizers for the table, but she ate three of the four stuffed mushrooms!
JERRY: You saved a receipt from twenty years ago?
GEORGE: I save everything, Jerry! For tax purposes, for personal audits, for vindication!
JERRY: You can't claim a stuffed mushroom as a tax write-off.
GEORGE: It was a business meal! I was selling myself!
JERRY: And the market plummeted.
GEORGE: I'm totaling it up. Over twenty-five years, bad dates have cost me six thousand, four hundred and twelve dollars.
JERRY: That's actually less than I would have guessed.
SCENE 4: INT. MONK'S DINER - DAY
[Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer are all crammed into the booth at Monk's Diner, eating lunch.]
ELAINE: So did you complete the deli survey?
JERRY: I spent forty-five minutes on it! They asked my opinion on the ambient store temperature and the density of the rye bread.
KRAMER: You fool! Now you're in their database! They know your bread preferences!
GEORGE: I sent out the invoices.
ELAINE: (horrified) You actually sent them?!
GEORGE: Certified mail. Three of them already bounced back, but Karen called me!
JERRY: She called you? What did she say?
GEORGE: She said she's reporting me to the Attorney General... but at least she remembered the mushrooms!
CLOSING MONOLOGUE
INT. STAND-UP COMEDY CLUB - NIGHT
JERRY:The worst part about receipts is when they ask, 'Do you want your receipt in the bag, or with you?' What does that mean, 'with you'? Like it's a guest? 'Oh, he'll be riding up front with me, thank you, we're travelling together.'
